Robert dorton

I founded the Law Offices of Robert Dorton to provide personal, high-quality legal services in Nebraska and western Iowa. I bring almost ten years of experience to my practice. I have won cases for thousands of individuals facing a wide variety of difficult legal issues over the years. I am excited to put my expertise to work for you. My legal career has been a continual process of learning new areas of the law and applying that knowledge in ways that are creative and, at times, cutting-edge. I am passionate about the transformative role law can play in people’s lives. I fundamentally believe that every person deserves equal access to the legal system; that the law exists to serve people’s needs; and that lawyers have a foundational role in ensuring justice for all. I am dedicated to serving everybody, regardless of background. Professional Background Prior to founding the Law Offices of Robert Dorton, I worked in the nonprofit legal services realm, where I represented people living with HIV/AIDS and mental health disabilities, as well as immigrants, refugees and asylum seekers. From 2008 to 2010, I served as the Attorney/Program Manager at Lutheran Immigration Services in Omaha, where I led a staff of 12 that provided immigration legal services throughout Nebraska. From 2005 to 2008, I was the Supervising Attorney at Positive Resource Center in San Francisco, California, where I represented hundreds of disabled individuals with claims for Social Security Disability and long-term disability insurance. From 2003 to 2005, I served as a Staff Attorney at the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley in San Jose, California, where I represented people living with HIV/AIDS in the areas of estate planning, disability discrimination, housing and employment discrimination, Social Security, and other general civil matters. From 2002 to 2003, I practiced corporate law at Shook, Hardy & Bacon, LLP, in San Francisco. Education and Personal Background I have a law degree from the Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California at Berkeley, and a B.A. degree in History and Peace Studies from the University of Notre Dame. I was born and raised in a small town in central Iowa. I live in Omaha with my husband, near family and dear friends. Licenses I am a member of the bar in Nebraska and California. My application to join the Iowa bar is pending.
